On Saturday, the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (GRYC) launched its first SheSails program focused on increasing the participation of women in the sport of sailing.

In 2018, the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club booked a race in the Winter Series as a dedicated women’s bar race and created training and practice sessions to ensure participants have the experience to to participate.

Since then, the Women’s Sailing Program has continued to grow with increasing participation and a range of formal and informal training opportunities, culminating in the creation of the SheSails Women’s Sailing Program of the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club.

President Louise Edwards welcomed everyone and Commodore Randal Cooper encouraged participants to try their hand at sailing, as it is one of the few sports where women and men compete equally. Following information on the program and formal training opportunities through the Club’s Discover Sailing Center, everyone was invited to attend a Team Sailing demonstration by Investigator College.

Then it was on Come and Try Sailing with a choice of small and large towable yachts, a vintage yacht, saber dinghies and safety boats.

After the boat familiarization and safety briefings, everyone headed to the “pond” in front of the GRYC. Buoys have been attached to provide an easy route to follow. The dinghy sailors had a blast and some trained on the safety boats.

The club received positive feedback from all participants. A light lunch was available and committee members spent one-on-one time with attendees to answer questions and encourage them to pre-register for scheduled events. Visit www.gryc.com.au or contact 8555 2617 or [email protected]
