At the recent Southampton Boat Show, MBY editor-in-chief Hugo Andreae had the opportunity to take a look inside the Sanlorenzo SX88, a bulky yacht, making its UK debut .
As the biggest boat at the 2021 Southampton Boat Show, the Sanlorenzo SX88 towered over the outer pontoon of Mayflower Park and, frankly, the Starship Enterprise itself would look less incongruous if perched in the same spot.
This model actually launched in 2017 as the flagship of the lineup before the SSX112 came along and stole that coat, but the SX88’s sleek design still drops jaws wherever it goes.
This particular Sanlorenzo SX88 will do that more than others, given that his home berth will be in the Solent (Lymington, to be precise).

Sanlorenzo presents the SX88 as a modern cross between an exploration mini yacht and a traditional flybridge, one of the main attractions being that the upper deck can be fully closed to protect guests from the elements, whether it is the oppressive Mediterranean heat or lingering British drizzle.
The upper deck is where you find the helm, leaving the forward end of the main deck free to become additional internal living space, but upstairs there is also space to relax on the semi-deck. deck which can be configured as a living room or a dining room.
In fact, there is a lot of leeway when it comes to the layout of the three decks, but another key feature of the Sanlorenzo SX88 is the rear axle design.
Here there is room to stow a mini flotilla of water toys – Sanlorenzo’s website shows one with a Williams jet tender and two jet skis attached to the deck – which can be deployed by a carefully integrated crane to let a 30 square meter beach club in a prime position on the waterline.
It’s a big boat to handle, but it’s fitted with the triple Volvo Penta IPS1050 (800hp), which means joystick control and a top speed of 23 knots.
