The Bay of Plenty Outdoor Radio Control Car Club is set to premiere on the big screen on TVNZ this evening at 8pm.

The club racing off-road in 1/5 scale 4wd, 2wd and 1/8 Nitro, electric radio controlled cars at TECT park in Ngawaro has attracted that of the infamous New Zealand comedy duo.

The Jono and Ben: Good Sports TV show contacted the BPORCCC three months ago as part of their hunt for Aotearoa’s most unique sports.

Club captain Mikkie Strong says he received an out of the blue phone call from the show’s producer three months ago.

“It’s a great achievement in terms of what the club can do.

“It’s a small sport that is now developing tremendously across the board and I think we have a lot to do with that here in the Bay of Plenty.

“Jono and Ben’s participation in this is just the icing on the cake.”

The BPORCCC has not always been fluid and almost completely disappeared in 2017 when membership declined significantly.

A group of volunteers, including Mikkie, decided to get down to business and start from scratch.

“The club was almost sinking but I could see the potential it had compared to other clubs in Auckland and others.

“I spent a lot of my time knocking everything down, making the track usable again, going to other clubs to compete and let it be known that our track was reopened.”

The club now has over 50 members and frequently hosts open days, race days and fun days.

“The first Sunday of the month is practice day and the third Sunday of the month is race day. We also have open houses every two months for people to come and see us. “

Jono and Ben went to the club on the BOP’s open house with other interested members of the public, where they tried out the sport themselves.

“There were a lot of people that day to talk to, interview and compete with,” says Mikkie.

“They were all very down to earth people.

“There were four or five film crews, a sound crew, agents and obviously Jono and Ben themselves.

“What you see on TV or hear on the radio is exactly what the pair are. They are very funny and just a bunch of pranksters.

“They take things very seriously though, there was a lot of competition between the two of them.”
