The University of Georgia football program continues its 2021-2022 national championship season by completing its training facility expansion. On the heels of the training facility’s completion, the school wasted no time in also announcing a $68.5 million upgrade to the south side of Sanford Stadium.
With 136,300 square feet of new space and 28,700 square feet of renovated space, the Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall sports headquarters building now has three floors of what the program calls high-performance training experiences.

“Heritage Hall’s football training space has been completely transformed into a premier training facility focused on the success of student-athlete football,” says Brian Berg, senior project manager for HOK Architect . “The facility celebrates the rich history of the program while positioning Georgia student-athletes for future success on and off the field.”
At pitch level, the design includes a new locker room with a central, private player lounge, equipment room, plunge pool and nutrition bar. A player corridor between the spaces connects to the indoor training ground and two adjacent outdoor training grounds. The hallway was clad in wood tones, metallic details and large-scale video displays showcasing Georgia alumni who went on to play in the NFL.
“This signature facility will now better support the goals of the university and our athletic association, while primarily focusing on the health and well-being of our student-athletes,” said J. Reid Parker, director of athletics. from Georgia.
Recovery spaces are part of the additions to the University of Georgia Training Center.

On the northwest side of the ground level, a new entrance features a black and red trophy. The player-centric designs also include a demo dining room and kitchen, a players’ lounge with seating, entertainment, and views of the player development areas. These spaces include a weight room, a sports medicine center with hydrotherapy and recovery, an auditorium for all teams, team meeting spaces and views of the interior court.
The double-height weight room features a double-sided video board and a plyometric stairway connecting at ground level. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the weight room overlook the outdoor training grounds which, combined with the windows, fill the weight room with natural light.

The second floor houses offices, conference rooms, player support offices, an expanded video suite, and a cardio mezzanine overlooking the weight room. A multipurpose lounge overlooking the indoor court can serve as a space to entertain athletes, rookies and their families.
The Sanford Stadium Improvement Project will include more width in the South Concourse on the 100 level, additional entry gates, restrooms and concessions by the start of the 2023 football season. After the 2023 season , Georgia plans to create more restrooms and suites in the 200 and 300 levels on the south side, followed by a new media room in the southwest corner. The current press box will be converted to premium seats.
