The only thing better than a magnificent antique yacht from the 1950s is one that has been meticulously restored.

Enter Abeking & Rasmussen Carefree. The timeless 110-footer, which Edmiston has just put up for sale for $5.6 million (€5.2 million), underwent a multi-million dollar refit in the late 2000s and is presented in immaculate condition. .

The ship was designed by German naval architect Geerd N. Hendel and launched by Abeking & Rasmussen in 1955 as verdein. Showcasing the finest German engineering, the vessel was strong and light from the start, with double-plank teak on oak frames.

In 2009, De Carlo began a major reconstruction that would span several years. The Italian outfit, which specializes in timber construction, has updated the interior and exterior while retaining plenty of original character. Today, Carefree combines classic lines and period styling with modern power and amenities.

The yacht’s interior features unique 1920s decor.

A highlight is the yacht’s unique 1920s decor. Edmiston says the owner scoured Europe for the perfect pieces of furniture, accessories and artwork to create a cohesive interior in keeping with the times. In terms of accommodation, the lower deck is equipped with a VIP cabin, a double cabin and a twin, while the owner’s suite is located forward on the main deck. Of course, all bedrooms are en-suite and the owner’s bathroom is clad in marble. Elsewhere there are four crew cabins.

Outside, meanwhile, there are plenty of outdoor lounging and dining areas on both decks. The flybridge, for example, offers comfortable seating for soaking up the sun and panoramic ocean views.

The engine room, which has been upgraded to modern superyacht standards, houses twin Caterpillar engines that allow the 1950s beauty to cruise at 12 knots or hit 14 knots at full heel. She has also been equipped with the latest technology, including zero-speed stabilizers and satellite communications. In fact, Edmiston adds that with just a few tweaks, the privately registered vessel could easily become commercial.

“Now on the market for the first time in its current configuration, Carefree awaits a new owner with the vision and aesthetic sensibility to take charge of a unique and very special yacht,” the yard said in a statement. “Much like a classic car, if properly maintained the ship will retain its value for decades.”
