The official HELENSBURGH Sailing Club season ended on November 13 with the end of the fall series – but the club’s youngest members have yet to complete the year.

Talented young sailors from HSC were joined by others from clubs across the country on Saturday and Sunday in the final RYA Scotland Academy session – this one in the Topper class.

The old RYA ‘academy’ concept has been refined to localize the competitive environment for the country’s top young sailors, giving young people across Scotland the opportunity to hone their skills in their local club environment. .

Scottish academies meet roughly every month for a ‘collective’, and the November Topper class collective took place at HSC on 20-21 November.

Twenty-two young sailors from clubs across the country enjoyed a great weekend of training and practice, and for once the weather gods had to – especially on Sunday, with blue skies and a good breeze from the northwest, when the fleet had a whale of a time off at Kidston Park.

The visitors left delighted with the welcome given to the HSC and the young sailors almost certainly slept all the way home!

There is an Optimist Academy this Saturday November 27, which will certainly be popular with the younger members of the CSS, then a hiatus in December before further sessions in January.

The club’s Winter Series will kick off in February, so it’s time to test the balaclavas and warm gloves!
