TORONTO, January 26, 2022 /CNW/ – The Broad Reach Foundation for Youth Leaders, a charity that supports equity-deserving youth, broke another systemic and historic barrier: Charles D. Waterman is the first black sailor to lead a sailing training and leadership organization for young people in Canada!

There are hardly any BIPOC children navigating in Canada, despite the longest coastline, the multitude of ships, clubs and initiatives. Broad Reach paves the way for equity and inclusion, engaging young people in developing skills, knowledge and social connectedness through sailing. I am that black sailor who will lead the community for change to expand access, engage young talent, optimism and energy, and bridge the gap between people with and without privilege..”

Our youth-led, government-funded Ships2Shore project Canadafacilitates young people’s access to maritime education and employment while strengthening young people’s attachment to Canada.

In 2021, our Sailing Access Fund helped young people access sailing and tall ship sailing training. Young people have led collaborations with organizations in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and New Scotlandcreating a vibrant pan-Canadian network of 3,000 youth engaged in maritime sector activities including the arts, civics, heritage and economics.

from Canada young people benefit greatly from discovering the value of our maritime sector where labor shortages are looming and where young people lack information about opportunities. We celebrate and take pride in our oceans, rivers and lakes and the wealth of opportunities they present for young people and the country.” says Marguerite PyronCEO of BRF.

We are proud, excited and inspired by the government’s recognition of the value and potential of young people. BIPOC, Anglo- and Francophone, newcomers Canada and socio-economically disadvantaged young people, to engage and benefit from the maritime sector and the opportunities that our country offers on its coasts. It will be the children at the helm. This is their time to lead the change” said Charles Duncan WatermanPresident, Broad Reach for Youth.
