Rupert Holmes casts his expert eye on the all-new ICE 70 designed by Umberto Felci for high performance cruising and racing

The ICE 70 is a magnificent design by Umberto Felci and has been designed for fast cruising and racing at the highest level, both with full and small crews and promises to combine elegance with the latest technology, high performance and versatility.

The result is beautifully clean styling and a clean aesthetic, with huge unobstructed deck areas and a very low coachroof.

Visually, the cockpit coamings are an extension of the coachroof line and even the large instrument pods at each helm station are shaped to echo the lines of the cabin roof.

In the ICE 70, Felci delivered a very contemporary hull shape with great shape stability, but without excess wetted area, especially when heeling. Carbon fiber is widely used in construction, accounting for about 30% of the fibers, and all structural components are vacuum infused epoxy laminate.

It’s no surprise that much of the customization is possible with the interior fittings. The interior of the first boat, which we saw under construction via video, is simple and uncluttered, emphasizing the refined and streamlined nature of the yacht.

The owner’s cabin and a twin guest cabin are forward, in front of a large and elegant saloon. Aft is the captain’s cabin, which has direct access to the galley, located in the port quarter.

The second boat will have more guest space, including two large aft en-suite cabins that are convertible between twin and double configurations, as well as a smaller Pullman cabin.

The galley in this boat is forward of the keel case, with the owner’s suite forward of this. There is also a very compact crew cabin up front which can double as a sail box if needed. In any case, the furniture is mainly in veneered sandwich panels to minimize the weight.

Both boats have an exceptionally large tender garage, with space for a 4.2m (13ft) RIB, which reduces the volume of accommodation aft of the boat. However, the capabilities of a larger tender will be preferred by some.

So far, three boats have been sold to owners in Italy, Mexico and Germany, with the first scheduled for its public debut at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival.

They all opted for the Cariboni telescopic lifting keel, which reduces the draft from 4.3 m to 2.75 m, which is much more manageable. The ICE 70 joins a range of nine models, from 52 to 100 feet.
