Anyone considering high performance cruising multihulls should take a look at Chris White’s designs, characterized by the Atlantic 47.

The Dartmouth, Massachusetts-based designer has thirty years of experience designing fast cruising catamarans and some innovative rigs to go with them.

The Atlantic catamaran series was first launched in 1985. They are immediately recognizable by their slender hull entrances, forward cockpit and aft wheelhouse layout.

The central cockpit is designed to give the helmsman good all-round visibility from the cockpit and inside the helm station. Some might consider elements of the coachroof and wheelhouse design as the forerunner of the early Gunboat style.

The Atlantic 47, originally launched in 2013, retains these highly valued features and is suitable for fast ocean sailing with a crew down to an accessible size. The cockpit is bulkier than previous models, which allows for a semi-raised galley.

The Atlantic 47 also has a dedicated workspace in the port hull for ongoing maintenance projects.

The lengthening of the design to 49 feet allowed for an aft cockpit. Like the Atlantic 47, the A49 is available as a sloop or with White’s patented MastFoil ketch rig – rotating aero masts designed to be the simplest and safest sail plan possible for small-crew cruising. without sacrificing performance.

Twelve of these MastFoil cats are currently sailing, nine A47s and three the new A49s.
