Yachtbuilder Vic Carpenter’s ‘Passing Wind’ is a classic masterpiece

passing wind is the life’s work of the incredibly skilled yacht builder and designer Vic Charpentier. The 62ft custom cruiser is a superb piece of craftsmanship with plank and beam construction and epoxy resin coating inside and out.

Built over a period of six years, passing wind was Carpenter’s last building project and was built for his personal use. He launched the masterpiece of Canada on Lake Huronwhere he sailed until 1999. The boat was finally transferred to Newport, Rhode Island, where it remained secret. Six years later, a local discovered the ship (with only her 90ft spruce spar visible) and immediately fell in love. Everything had been perfectly preserved, from the incredible woodwork and finishes to the veils and lines. It was eventually upgraded with new electronics and equipment, and won its class in 2006. There are no shortcuts in craftsmanship and woodworking. passing wind, all directed by Carpenter himself. Solid one-piece Honduran mahogany slab doors and beautiful inlay work on the counters, tables and transom are worthy of any art gallery. The boat is built entirely of wood with a one inch thick deck constructed from three layers of laminated red cedar and mahogany.
