Later this week in the Fraser Valley, the Vancouver Canucks will open training camp at the Abbotsford Events Center, the new arena for their American Hockey League branch.

We know how day one will be, with Travis Green’s signature “40s” skate bag.

From there, things become a little less certain. We know the coaching staff will focus on teaching after a summer of rotation, structure and tactics. We also know the club intend to downsize fairly quickly, which increases the focus on the lineup battles that will ultimately shape the club’s 23-man roster on opening day.

There are a good number of jobs to be gained, especially on the left side of the third pair in defense and on the fourth line-up up front. There are roles up for grabs too, with the competition heightened by the depth of talent the club have amassed up front.

The Canucks’ camp will also be shaped by the uncertain contract status of the club’s two most important young players, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, who have yet to sign. Their presence or absence at camp will have a big impact on the roster and will dominate the conversation locally.

Camp is just around the corner, let’s drop the puck on our training camp blanket by projecting the 23-man roster.
