The Yachting Malta Coastal Race started at 10:00 am CEST on Wednesday October 20th. 42 teams entered the race representing 17 countries. The Royal Malta Yacht Club’s senior race officer, Peter Dimech, sent the competitors on a course of around 30 nautical miles northwest of Comino. The Coastal Race is the traditional prelude to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, which kicks off on Saturday 23 October.

Starting from the port of Marsamxett, the international fleet first rounded the fairway buoy in the port of Valletta. After hoisting the spinnakers, the yachts were a magnificent sight as they made their way to the Sliema waterfront and St Paul’s Island. The next mark on the course was Comino, with yachts circling around the barren island and leaving it to port. The fleet then veered upwind and set off until the finish at Marsamxett Harbor.

Online awards went to Frédéric Puzin’s Ker 46, Daguet 3 – Corum. Puzin and his stellar French crew are no strangers to the Rolex Middle Sea Race, having finished second in its class in 2019. However, this is a new boat for Puzin, who hails from Marseille, southern France. . Daguet 3 -Corum was only a few minutes ahead of François Bopp’s Swiss Farr 52 Chocolate 3, with the Swedish J / 111 Blur of Peter Gustafsson, the third boat to cross the finish line.

Christoph, Aaron and Maya Podesta’s First 45 Elusive 2, winner of the last two Rolex Middle Sea Races, was the fourth boat to complete and the first Maltese boat. A total of six boats from Malta were in the race, including Jonathan Gambin’s Ton Ton Laferla, Sean Borg’s Xpresso, Sebastian Ripard’s Calypso and the two J / 109s from the Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation, JYS Jan and JYS Jarhead.
