There was something to celebrate at the Stratford Boat Club with the presentation of trophies to the winners of the President’s Sculls competition organized in 2020 and 2021 due to the disruption caused by Covid-19.

The men’s trophy was won by Tim Lunel and Heather Hayton won the women’s trophy, but neither of them were able to attend.

The winner of the junior trophy was Freya Watts, who went through her fiercely fought sleeves to win against her club mates, including some who were older than her.

Meanwhile, the Adapted Trophy, recycled from head coach Mark Dewdney’s collection, was won by Jake Blatcher for his dedication and contribution to the Adapted Team over the past two years, as well as for his marked improvement in sculling and rowing.

Club President Paul Stanton said: “We are indebted to the Rose family for the original trophies, which were again recycled / reused for presentation.

“Albert George Gerald Rose was the original benefactor and everyone knew him as Sonny and was club captain in the early 1930s, and rowed in many four winners.

Sonny owned and ran The Boat House (now Avon Boating) next door. Tim’s pot is dated 1929, which Sonny won in Nottingham, and Heather’s pot dates from 1927 and was awarded as couple chairman .

“Jake’s second trophy dates back to 1928 and that’s when Sonny won the Maiden Fours in Stratford’s own regatta.

“Freya’s trophy dates from 1929 and was aptly won by Sonny in the Junior Fours race at Ross Regatta where Freya raced last week with considerable success.”

The club are now looking forward to their own Covid-safe regatta this Saturday, with races starting at 8 a.m.
