The Wicklow Sailing Club was in France earlier this month to promote the SSE Renewables Round Ireland Yacht Race in June.
Commodore de Wicklow Kyran O’Grady was greeted by the President of the National Union for Offshore Racing (UNCL), Anne de Bagneaux-Savatier, to speak at the French yacht club’s annual conference at the nautical show from Paris.
UNCL is the yacht club that created the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) – the IRC rule, the critical measured handicap rule, used on the most competitive and prestigious sailing events, such as the Fastnet Giraglia, Sydney-Hobart and the Round Ireland Race.
Wicklow’s invitation marked a milestone for both clubs as UNCL celebrated its fiftieth anniversary and the WSC its 21st race in Ireland in 2022.
Thanks to Wicklow’s promotional efforts, the Irish 704-mile offshore race is now a race on the UNCL calendar for double-handed and full-crew yachts.
The Irish classic is also part of the RORC series and the Class40 series.
As previously reported, following the cancellation of the 2020 race due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2022 edition is planned with relevant precautions in place to ensure a safe experience.
âWe were forecasting a fleet of almost 80 boats when we had to cancel our plans for 2020,â O’Grady said. “Now that we are learning to live with Covid-19, there is pent-up demand in addition to a renewed interest in ocean racing, so there is a strong turnout.”
The official Notice of Race document will be published shortly.
