The Alberni Valley Tyee Club recently held their final day of the one-season ladder derby on September 12 at Clutesi Haven Marina.
The first prize presentations in the adult and junior categories were made at the end of the closing day, including hidden prizes drawn for members who entered their qualified salmon in the books.
In the adult category, Harry Sperber took home the $ 2,000 prize with his 30.3 pounds, which earned him a Bronze Pin for catching a salmon over 30 pounds during the season. His fish also won him the award for best angler and the signature jacket for the largest salmon caught in total.
In second place, Roland Goehl won $ 1,000 for his 27.3 pound salmon. Jeremy Hopkins took home $ 500 for third place for his 27.0 lb fish.
In the junior category of the ranking season, the top 3 winners were Danica Schwager who won $ 500 with a weight of 28.0 lbs; second prize of $ 300 went to Aiden Nelson with a 24.0 lb salmon; and $ 100 to Ryker Klyne with his 23.5 lb salmon.
Garth Ramsay won the Bad beat award from a reel donated by Island fisherman magazine for its 26.8 pounds. The best guide award for the adult member whose boat brought in the biggest fish for the junior winner was caught was Bud Schmidt, who guided his granddaughter Danica Schwager into her first place fish.
A bonus prize of a Garmin Echomap sponsored by the Tyee Club was won by Craig Filipchuck for the biggest salmon caught on the day of the closure. The other top salmon weighed were Avery Johnson, the only junior to weigh a fish that day at 19.4 lbs and Bud Pedersen at 18.5 lbs, all caught in Alberni Inlet.
Despite another season of COVID-19 restrictions, scale ticket sales have seen an increase in participation from adults and juniors, making for great family times on the water. Seasonal recipes will be used for salmon improvement needs. The Tyee Club executive would like to thank the marina attendants for their help throughout the year and the many sponsors who generously contributed to our hidden raffles.
