Originally delivered as a naval vessel in 1936, the classic 38-meter yacht Sacajawea is expected to go under the hammer on June 23.

She will be sold with no reserve through Boathouse Auctions, and due to her historic status, she is eligible for near-complete engine upgrades through grant-based financing.

She is currently in Oakland, Calif., and all of her most recent investigative documents are available on the online auction listing.

With a rich history behind her and a bright future ahead of her, the yacht has had a number of duties during her 83-year lifespan, including surveying the Alaskan seabed and service during the Second World War.

The classic yacht was built by the Lake Washington Shipyard and it was designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the Bering Sea. Its hull is constructed of riveted high-iron steel which is considered purer than the steel used in modern shipbuilding.

Sacajawea is now a popular charter yacht that operates in North America, including Alaska and San Francisco. Prospective owners will be able to continue her charter legacy as early as this summer.

She can accommodate twelve guests and up to eight crew members in nine cabins. The owner’s suite adjoins the wheelhouse, with an en-suite bathroom and generous attached storage space. The remaining guest accommodation is on the main deck and lower deck.

Rarely do yachts for sale offer the opportunity to offset the cost, but Jack Mahoney, managing director of Boathouse Auctions, said “the refit which would likely be fully covered by the US government through grants established to keep these beautiful and historic ships in service, but with a considerable reduction in emissions”.

The current owners have lovingly maintained Sacajawea over the years, most recently with a revised crane system with a lifting capacity of 6,123 kilograms and a radius of 2.4 meters.

Her interiors are warm and welcoming, with an industrial touch that her owners could tweak to a more luxurious finish if they so choose.

Auctions open June 23, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. EDT.
