Following a major redevelopment, Scout will join his sister ship TS Playfair in the home port of Brig Hamilton, Ontario. Together, the two Brigantines will offer sailing courses to young people and adults. Brigs, a 60-year-old non-profit organization, will operate tall ships and offer more than 350 berths per year for new trainees to embark from summer 2022.

“The return of the original ship, Scout, sailing training is exciting for the Hamilton community and we are incredibly honored to support and be a partner of Brigs, ”said Blair mckeil, President and CEO of Breakwater Investments. “The teamwork and skills that young people acquire through the sailing training program not only promote and reward self-confidence, leadership and character building, but most importantly, connects young people from all walks of life and have lifelong friendships. McKeil said.

Commissioned in 1963, VUT Scout was one of from Canada first specially designed sail training ships. Thousands of young people have learned to sail on it and many graduates of Brigs sailing programs have gone on to marine careers.

Scout was Brigs’ first ship and it holds a very special place in the hearts of thousands of our elders, ”said Francois Clegg, Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Brigs Youth Sail Training. “We are incredibly happy to welcome Scout back to sailing training and now being able to offer many more places on our popular summer courses. All of us at Brigs are more than grateful for the generosity of Mr. McKeil and his team for embracing our vision and providing the financial support and technical expertise to make it happen. “

“We are delighted to welcome Scout at his new Hamilton home, ”said HOPA Ports President and CEO Ian hamilton. “What better way to celebrate our port city and its maritime heritage than to help train a new generation of young people as passionate about the Great Lakes as we are.

Brigs is now calling for volunteers to help with maintenance, outreach, fundraising and programming. To get involved visit brigs.ca/updates or email [email protected].
