Heavy morning fog lifted just in time for Siren, a 45′ New York 32 designed by Sparkman & Stephens, to take the lead in the 23rd edition of the Castine Classic Yacht Race on August 4.

Thirty-five boats sailed 19.6 miles under clear blue skies from Castine to Camden through a “bright, steady breeze from south to southwest,” reported one of the event organizers, David Bicks. The race “battered the sparkling waters of Penobscot Bay”. wrote Bicks and finished just off Curtis Island in Camden.

The Castine Race, sponsored by the Castine Yacht Club, was the first of three days of racing, followed by the Camden Feeder Race at Brooklyn on Friday and the Eggemoggin Reach Regatta on Saturday.

Skippered by Peter Cassidy, Siren took Classic A honors and won the Ames Cup as the overall winner of the Classics A, B and C fleets. The Ames Cup honors Richard Glover Ames and Henry Russel Ames, who were lost at sea in an unsuccessful attempt to save their father who was swept overboard during the Newport to Bergen Norway Race. The Sparkman & The Stephens Trophy for Best S&S Yacht in the Fleet was also awarded to Siren.

Jewel II, a 40′ Reimers design built in 1962, skippered by Chris Bouzaid, won the Classic B. The Classic C was helmed by Chance, a 34′ Herreshoff design built in 1934 and skippered by John Blodgett. Phalarope, a Concordia 39 skippered by Tom Ashton, won the Phalarope trophy for best Concordia yacht, beating the other three Concordias in Classic C.

In the Spirit of Tradition Class Outlier, a 55′ Botin design built in 2019 and skippered by Harvey Jones took the lead, followed by Blackfish, a 49′ Taylor design skippered by Ron Zarrella.
