Shortened spring training contributed to Andrew Heaney and Blake Treinen’s shoulder injuries

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts described a cautious approach the team intended to take with its players – especially pitchers – ahead of a short spring training this year, but that didn’t work. not enough for Andrew Heaney and Blake Treinen to avoid the respective shoulder problems.

After pitching 10.1 scoreless innings and 16 strikeouts-three-walks in two starts, Heaney was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this week with shoulder discomfort. left.

Treinen was dropped from the Atlanta Braves series and is expected to be available this weekend at Petco Park, but on Friday he was put in IL with right shoulder discomfort.

When discussing the two injuries, Roberts expressed his belief that the short spring training coming out of the MLB lockout is partly to blame, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“Yeah, I think so,” Roberts said Friday after the Dodgers placed Blake Treinen on the IL with shoulder discomfort. “We did what we could to prepare them and not overwork them at the start of the season. But I think with any pitcher, the uncertainty of when we’re going to start (the season), if we’re going to start and then now we have a week to prepare for spring training – I think that’s definitely had an impact.”

If there’s a silver lining, Roberts has previously indicated that the team doesn’t view Heaney’s discomfort as a long-term issue or related to past shoulder injuries.

Treinen could be in a similar boat, given the Dodgers expected him to be available after resting earlier in the week. Treinen last pitched on April 14, which was his third appearance of the season.

Dodgers launch plans without Heaney and Treinen

LA turned to Tyler Anderson to fill the void in the starting rotation. Anderson has already appeared out of the bullpen as a Tony Gonsolin piggyback, and is now making his first start for the Dodgers on Saturday.

In the bullpen, Evan Phillips is one of those who will be counted on the most in the absence of Treinen. Phillips pitched a clean inning in Game 1 of the series against the San Diego Padres and struck out 16 in a row.

Phil Bickford and Brusdar Graterol are also among those given more opportunities.
