If you want to go to sea almost whatever the weather conditions, then this Altena 53 is the kind of boat for you, as Nick explains …

Built in the Netherlands in 1998 as an extended version of the 47ft Altena Blue Water trawler, Poodle is made of really hard stuff.

Take for example the 6mm thick steel hull, which includes aileron stabilizers and a fully shielded main propeller.

That small ship feel continues inside through the storm-proof doors, with traditional DIY woodwork and even a navigation station – the kind of feature you rarely see outside of ocean-going tall ships.

A boat like the Hardy 65 deserves a real test, so with snow on the decks, we go around the island

Accommodation can accommodate up to six people, split between two stacked cabins in the bow and a huge owner’s suite aft.

But the heart of the Altena 53 is its heavy-duty engine, a commercial Caterpillar 3306 diesel engine designed to run at full capacity 100% of the time.

And should that ever fail, there’s a 56hp Vetus wing motor as well, so you have an emergency option to get home.

Enjoy the visit …
