The Tunisian Olympic Committee has confirmed that young sailor Eya Guezguez, who recently sailed for her country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, died after her boat capsized while training with her twin sister and Olympic teammate. Sara. Guezguez was only 17 years old.

The two sisters and the rest of the Tunisian national team were apparently unprepared for a sudden gust of wind as they trained off Tunis. Sarra survived but Eya tragically drowned after the boat capsized.

Sarra and Eya placed 21st in the 49er FX two-person sailing event in Tokyo, but just being at the games was an inspiration to girls in their country and around the world. They were the youngest athletes at the 2020 Games and hoped to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will be held in Paris.

“May Allah have mercy on the deceased, grant her eternal rest in Paradise, and grant her family and loved ones as well as the entire sports family patience and comfort. We belong to Allah and to Him we will return,” said said the Tunisian Olympic Committee.
