The Finn fleet has been extremely active in San Diego over the past two weeks with the San Diego Yacht Club hosting the Pacific Coast Championship (September 4-5) and most recently the Finn North American Masters Championship (September 10-12 ).

The Pacific Coast Championship brought together 20 boats from as far away as Missouri, Chicago and Colorado. Jack Jennings on Pied Piper finished in first place with 10 points for the 5-race series. In second and third place, Roland Fournier (2nd) on SurFinn and AJ Nosar (3rd) on Finn, both with 12 points.

“The first three boats were all within two points of each other. I was super happy and lucky to have won. Thanks to Chris [Snow] for the quality coaching and training for the fleet Thursday and Friday … it definitely made the difference for me, especially at the start line where I felt very confident all weekend, “said Jennings .

Many Finnish sailors were using the PCC Finns as a warm-up for this weekend’s North American Finn Championship, sailed the same course on the roads of Coronado. A returning sailor was Rob Coutts of Mission Bay Yacht Club. Coutts placed in the middle of the fleet at the PCC and returned this weekend for the North American Masters finishing second over Beverley with 21 points. However, even those who came with the practice couldn’t compete with Gregg Morton on Pickle Dish.

Morton took a solid lead on day one and never gave up. Winning races 5 and 6 on Saturday and finishing second in race 7, Morton’s victory was confirmed. Morton won the North American Masters title with just 11 points, finishing four of eight races first.

SDYC Staff Commodore Mike Dorgan commented on Morton’s success. Competitors commented that it appeared to have ‘other gear’ sailing upwind, sailing a few degrees higher and a few tenths of a knot faster. No one sailing this weekend could touch it. explanation about his regatta, he sailed race (even if he has already won the regatta) winning the last race and the general championship. ”

“I just seemed to have a few more wheels than in the past. I haven’t sailed a Finn since last February, then I just got into this regatta… so I was impressed too. couldn’t do it. ” It was more perfect and the race committee did a really good job, ”said Morton.

The fight for second place between Coutts and James Buley, who finished third on BWM with 24 points, really boiled down to the final race. Coutts was able to stay ahead of Buley, finishing third in the eighth race. Buley was stuck in the middle of the fleet and finished the final race in eighth place, allowing Coutts to take second place overall.

The North American Masters Championship saw one pullout.

The conditions on the water this weekend were typical of the champagne sailing conditions of San Diego. The winds ranged from 7 to 15 knots. A handful of stages were covered with the “O Flag” flying, making more than 10 knots over the entire course and allowing sailors to use kinetics, such as pumping and ooching on the white caps.

Waterfront manager Jeff Johnson was on the course today keeping an eye on conditions and results. “The race was close throughout the course. The boats separated a few meters at each mark with passing lanes both upwind and downwind. The competition was great to watch,” he said. declared.

After the races, sailors took advantage of the daily social activities and camaraderie out of the water, much of the Finnish fleet community. Today, September 12, they concluded the regatta with an award ceremony.
