DAME Design Award 2021 Garmin Surround View should make docking easier, says DAME Jury Member Elaine Bunting
Leaving and returning to a berth in a marina can be one of the trickiest parts of boating, and more than a family dream has failed on very stressful maneuvers. Difficulties are a major barrier to entry for newcomers and many players in the shipping industry are determined to solve this problem with technology. One of those offerings comes in the form of Garmin Surround View.
Propulsion will always be the key to ease of maneuvering, but a wave of technology is coming from the auto industry that will facilitate judgment and decision making. Sensors, cameras and parking assistance systems are standard in cars, and similar systems and software are quickly adapting to boating.
The latest to be launched is the Garmin Surround View, which has a camera system that provides a 360 ° bird’s eye view as you step into a marina berth. The aerial view is derived from six 1080p camera arrays: forward on the bow; a look back to the stern; and side cameras to port and starboard.

These images are stitched together into a composite and displayed on a Garmin chartplotter or compatible MFD bar display. Cameras can move to any area from individual cameras, and the screen has a ‘situational awareness’ mode that will display distance markers and a bumper area with preset boundaries.
The Garmin Surround View sells for over $ 16,000 – a major investment – but that makes sense on large boats with small crews and those with large blind spots, such as catamarans.
