NBC Excites Fans at 2021 Lagos Yacht Club Boat Racing Championship


In recent years, a growing number of people are finding boat racing more accessible as the sport has grown in popularity. This is thanks to many factors such as innovation in sailboats which facilitates navigation, and also a number of community / societal clubs and schools, which promote it among their members and students. Plus, it’s hard to miss out on the incredible physical and health benefits of boat racing!

To help advance the sport in Nigeria while promoting health and wellness, the leading consumer packaged products company and member of the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (CCHBC), Nigerian Bottling Company Ltd (NBC), has always partnered with the Lagos Yacht Club on its annual yacht racing championship, for almost a decade.

While the pandemic brought a hiatus from all physical events (as we know them), it was an atmosphere filled with excitement as NBC delighted fans and attendees at this year’s edition that ended. recently held on Saturday September 18th at the Lagos Yacht Club. The competition saw a total of 45 energetic sailors, including women and young competitors, who took part in the different categories of the tournament. After three exhilarating hours of sailing and racing, the winners emerged from the three categories of boats used: Hobiecats, Lightnings and Tarpons; and received championship trophies.

Some of the yacht racing trophy winners this year include: Avy E, Sandra Ozioma, Julian Hardy, Ed Skene, Laurens Kreuze, Liam Haayer, Anouk Sebillet, Mike Barnes, Lanre Mabawonku and Ayo Ogunbiyi.

What makes all of this worth it? John Shidiak, The Lagos Yacht Club Commodore responded, “We have seen the number of Nigerian sailors increase year by year and this is something we are extremely proud of as it is brewing in a community. The Nigerian Bottling Company has been a long-standing partner and supporter of this competition and we are delighted to be able to continue this activity despite the hiatus caused by the pandemic. We remain convinced that this collaboration will be extremely beneficial in motivating Nigerians to adopt boat racing as a way of life ”.

Over the years, NBC and Coca-Cola, its Coke System partner in Nigeria, have continued to actively promote the development of sport in the country. In addition to sponsoring this regatta every year, the Coke System has invested in some of Nigeria’s biggest sporting events through ongoing partnerships between Coca-Cola and the EPL as well as FIFA. Partnerships such as these have brought the FIFA World Cup Trophy to Nigeria three times, as part of the FIFA World Cup ™ Trophy Tour and have allowed many consumers to travel and watch live football tournaments. The company has also made significant efforts to strengthen local football in the country, including the construction of the state-of-the-art youth and sports center in Gbagada, Lagos.
