It’s easy to forget the role our yachts have in our lives and the memories they help forge. Theo Stocker presents the December 2021 issue of Yachting Monthly

Unless you’re one of the bold souls who plan to sail in the winter (I admit, this year I’m not), the foyer side is probably more appealing than the dock or the shipyard.

The boats are out, the evenings are dark and energy must be mobilized to brave the elements.

But all is not lost for the intrepid sailor.

Much fun is still to be had from two vital winter activities – memories and planning.

As I flip through my logbook (and the photos on my phone) this year, I recall happy memories of windless days at anchor on a miraculously calm Jurassic coast.

For Graham Snook, longtime Monthly Yachting member of staff and contributor, he looks back over 12 years as a boat owner, having recently sold Leprechaun (See page 60 of the last issue)

25 tips to keep your boat prepared, your crew warm and winter adventures

Memories don’t have to be serious.

We would love to hear your shaving confessions that make you laugh or cringe, and offer absolution for your crimes (see page 98 of the last issue).

There, but for the grace of God, we all go.

As for next season, the dream and the planning begin now.

It’s worth reading Andy Du Port’s advice on securing at sea – a poorly stored kit can cause serious problems when the weather turns bad – and a few simple modifications to your boat in winter could make it a lot more seaworthy. (see page 36 of the last issue).

Or maybe you want to dream of sailing on the “plateau” of Star wars to the Irishman Skellig Michael, or bump Poldark‘s Ross and Demelza on the rugged Cornish coast (see page 52 of the latest issue).

When there is a fire in the fireplace, there is no limit to the adventures that await you.
