ANNAPOLIS, Maryland (WJZ) – In an effort to keep the Chesapeake Bay healthy, the Maryland Tourism Board and the National Park Service train aquatic business owners on how to educate their clients about the importance of this natural resource.

Captain Hayes of Island Chill Yacht Charters is one of the nearly 30 official storytellers of Chesapeake Bay.

“What we do is we fold all the information back into what the natural experience is,” Hayes said.

So while you are relaxing, paddle boarding or just sailing, get some interesting little information.

Matthew Scales of the Tourist Board said these storytellers live and breathe Chesapeake Bay, arranging fishing charters, lighthouse tours and even kayaking tours.

“It’s their livelihood and we want to make sure this berry is there for years to come,” Scales explained.

Charter guest Sandra Solomon appreciated the mix of education and R&R. “It was laid back, relaxing and informative,” she said.

For Captain Hayes, it’s about preserving the environment and its way of life.

“It’s absolutely essential if we are to conserve this resource to understand and maintain it,” said Hayes.
