Man thanks Castle Cove Sailing Club staff after crash

A MAN knocked unconscious after falling from his boat while involved in an accident at a national sailing race thanked the “angels who saved his life”.

The drama took place at the Noble Marine RS800 National Championship at Castle Cove Sailing Club.

Security boats at the September 9 event rushed to help the injured man as coastguards and paramedics attended.

Ian Green, beach master at CCSC, called the ambulance from the shore. He said: “It was coming towards the end of the race day and two RS800 boats were sailing side by side, coming under the same set of brands.

“They were going very fast and the branch of one of the boats knocked over a member of the crew who was on a trapeze on the other boat. He was hit in the head and both boats capsized, losing control. It was very scary.

Fortunately, the other crew member of the boat where one of them was injured was a coast guard named Alex, so he didn’t panic and quickly realized that his teammate was in a mess. pretty bad going.

“The nearby security boat rushed over and pulled the unconscious man onto the boat. They contacted me to tell me to call an ambulance as the man paced back and forth unconscious and struggling to to breathe.

“One of the crew on our other rigid inflatable boat (RIB), Grace, was a trained nurse, so she was working to try and keep him awake.

“He was then brought ashore and taken to hospital in an ambulance. Luckily he recovered well and returned the next day, which is great news.”

The injured person thanked those who saved him.

In an email to emergency crews he said: “Dear 800 family, just wanted to say I’m fine, but a little beaten up after the accident.

“To everyone involved with CCSC, my sincere respect and gratitude, your professionalism and quickness of action probably saved my life. To Grace who supported me during the 30 minutes in the RIB, I did not. have no words to express how I feel You are an angel whose absolute determination I will never forget.

“To the local Coast Guard, paramedics and NHS staff who have assisted me, you all have my deepest respect and consideration, a credit to your vocations.

“Finally, thank you Alex, you saved me and helped restore me to my family, you know how I feel.”
