Kings Island, a place for fun and family, is now also for world-class athletes. Olympic hopefuls Cassidy Norton and Christopher Bak used the wave pool at Soak City Waterpark to train for a Coastal rowing competition. The two Olympic hopefuls will face off in the beach rowing world finals in Portugal next month. The Beach Sprint format begins with a beach sprint between 10m and 50m for the rower or one of the rowers. After entering the boat, the boat slaloms around two buoys then turns around a third buoy at 250m and oars directly to the beach before one of the rowers leaves the boat and runs to the line arrival. The sport is ideal for rowers in the Midwest who have experience in coastal or river rowing. World Rowing and US Rowing expect Beach Sprint to make its debut at the 2026 Junior Olympics in Dakar and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Coach Marc Oria said Soak City’s 39,000 square foot Tidal Wave Bay wave pool is the perfect aquatic training facility for its athletes. “The large wave pool where we train is an amazing tool for acquiring personal watercraft skills with very difficult waves,” said Oria. “He creates different wave patterns, including 3 intersecting waves, creating diamond-shaped waves in different directions.” Soak City Water Park season is almost over. If you want to swim one last time, Labor Day is the last day. Until then it’s open on weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
