Day two of the 2021 International Masters Regatta started slowly and ended with a bang. Kicking off the day with more than an hour postponement only gave competitors more time to strategize and communicate. Carl Buchan and his team must have organized the secret to success because they simply owned the course today. Winning three of the four races contested, Buchan made his way considerably to the top of the mid-fleet scorecard for first place.

Ahead of today’s races, Buchan told SDYC director Alli Bell, “We plan to step off the line and stay at the top of the group in the opening minutes of the race. Consistency is what we’re looking for. ” And consistency is what Buchan brought – a consistent victory!

After yesterday’s races it was obvious that today could see some major changes in the results. And that’s what he did, starting with the fifth race, the first race of the day. Buchan came out strong from the starting line, but not without fierce competition following close behind. Bill Menninger, who finished second in race five, and Tad Lacey, who finished third, gave Buchan a run for his money. Lacey used the first run of the day to set the standard for her remaining runs, ending the day with a 3, 5, 1, 7.

“We went sailing,” Lacey began. “The first race was exciting with changing and difficult conditions and today’s competition was very fierce. We are going to start again tomorrow and sail well. We feel like we are improving with every race despite the results.”

The second race of the day, race six, continued to be dominated by Buchan. Andy Roy started the race quickly. Although first around the weather mark, Roy was beaten by Buchan on the leeward edge. Roy was second ahead of Rod Davis in third.

In the seventh race, Don Jesberg led the fleet at the start, eventually falling behind and allowing Tad Lacey to gain ground and steal the victory. Scott Harris was also set to compete in the seventh race, finishing second and maintaining that status until the last race, the eighth race.

Of course, the last race of the day was also won by Carl Buchan. Competitors are sure to come back tomorrow with someone to watch. The fleet remains tight and the navigation remains tight, promising more exciting races for the last day of the regatta.

The sailors enjoyed an evening at the dock and live music today after the races. The last day of racing will resume tomorrow, Saturday 23 October.
