Longtime and highly regarded club member Kevin Holmes died on Sunday while racing his Streaker canoe at the club, based at Cold Edge Road Reservoir, near Ovenden Moor.

Police said they were called at 3:27 p.m. with a report of a man with what was believed to be a medical episode at the tank.

Emergency services responded, but he was sadly declared deceased shortly thereafter.

On Wednesday, the Halifax Sailing Club held a commemorative race for Mr. Holmes, who is believed to be in his 60s.

He posted on his website: “On Wednesday night there was a commemorative run for one of the club’s longtime, loyal and much-loved members, who sadly passed away while racing his Streaker canoe at the club on Sunday. September 5.

“A beautiful evening saw a minute of silence in memory of Kevin before several dinghies finished a race, with many more members ashore.

“After the race, everyone stood outside and exchanged stories of Kevin over a drink or two.

“Kevin will be sadly missed by all members, not least because he is such a jovial and friendly character.

“He loved to race on sailboats and pass his knowledge on to others.

“All our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.”

Police said they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Holmes’ death and that a file had been prepared for the coroner.
