A trio of hardy sailors braved the icy conditions to take to the water at the Welland Yacht Club on Sunday.

Due to the low temperatures, the first task was to break the ice from the covers of the boats to rig them.

With a favorable course set for three laps (only three turns needed to complete a lap), Mark Scourfield (Solo), Richard Holland (Laser Radial) and Eric Murray (Mirror) set off for the start of the third race in the correct sense. named Frostbite series.

The winner of the third race of the Frostbite series was Mark Scourfield. (53411028)

With the extended portion of the course favoring Solo overall, the gusts allowed both Solo and Radial to keep planning.

By the time the second lap started, the boats were fairly wide apart with Scourfield in the lead ahead of Holland and Murray at the back of the fleet.

Order remained throughout and despite some strong gusts, all three completed the course without incident or the need for the safety boat.

Scourfield maintained the victory after applying the handicaps of Richard Holland second and Eric Murray third.

All three earned the precious low points for each place which strengthened their positions in the overall results table.

Welland Yacht donated the proceeds of an evening of charity racing to the RNLI and the Coastguard Association. Representatives from both charities attended the club's presentation night last week to each receive the £ 250 in proceeds.
