SHARJAH, Aug 25, 2021 (WAM) – The Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) on Tuesday held free training for more than 28 fishermen and boat owners who operate small boats (up to 12 meters). The event was first held in Sharjah, in cooperation with the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, as part of government programs to improve the safety and security of the marine environment and procedures, as well as reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring awareness of legal issues relating to vessel operations.
Participants were briefed on the structure of the boat, how to tow it safely on a trailer or car, and the preparations needed to go on a sea trip. Other topics included the maximum load capacity of the boats. , engine power and maintenance, as well as fuel management tips, in which the public was asked to retain at least 30 percent of fuel capacity for emergency use.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, President of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, said: “We have organized this training course in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure as part of our joint efforts to preserve the marine environment and strengthen the safety and security measures therein. , thus contributing to the preservation of living organisms and plants in the marine ecosystem with the aim of reducing pollution levels resulting from the dumping of waste into seawater. ”
She stressed the need to educate fishermen and boat users on the importance of the environment and natural resources, adding that this is part of the efforts undertaken by EPAA to conserve marine life in the United Arab Emirates. , especially since the Arabian Gulf region is considered an ecologically protected area, where it is forbidden to throw waste of any kind to protect marine life, fishing and beaches.
The speaker provided various tips on how to navigate safely when leaving and returning to the dock, and gave the most basic rules when sailing to keep boats, vehicles and vessels safe at sea. Participants were also briefed on the safety and security equipment that must be available on each vessel, internationally recognized maritime distress signals and maritime accidents that can occur and how these can be avoided.
For his part, Abdulaziz Salem Al Suwaidi, director of the marine sustainability department at EPAA, said that the course, which has seen a high participation of experienced fishermen, will in the future be held in several stages in all cities and towns and cities. The objective of the course is to facilitate the process of obtaining a maritime driving license by fishermen and boat owners, to improve their skills in the use and maintenance of boats, to introduce them to the aspects legal issues, in addition to educating them on how they can help protect the marine environment by not dumping all kinds of waste but by practicing safe fishing.
