Corpus Christi Yacht Club to host US Multihull Championship next week

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX. (October 29, 2021) – Finally, during the 2021 American Sailing Championship season, the Corpus Christi Yacht Club and the Formula Wave Class will host the American Multihull Championship from November 1 to 5. The regatta, contested on Formula Wave class boats, will see 80 sailors from 30 states and Puerto Rico compete for the Hobie Alter Trophy.

“This will be the biggest US multihull championship in the past 20 years, and possibly the biggest wave regatta in the past 10,” said event co-chair Ben Wells. “We have many sailors competing who have been successful both on the wave and on other catamarans, and this regatta will prove to be a good challenge for all.” Among the sailors of the fleet registered for the event, more than half are over sixty years old.

“It’s a global fleet,” said John Nekus, the new US Multihull Championship committee chair for the event. “There are world class sailors coming to town and people who are just day sailors, and that’s the beauty of competing at this level and the beauty of US Sailing. We attract the best competitors, but we are also open to people who want to join us on the water and want to participate.

“In that regard, in any competition where you have that many boats, it shows that the organization and the planning have been excellent. It’s an active multihull fleet, so you have to congratulate them for that, bringing people together from all over the United States and different parts of the world is something great to see, ”continues Nekus. “Especially considering that we didn’t have the event last year and that the trips were difficult. It will be very exciting and fun to have this group of people together after a long time that we have been through.

The event was hosted by a full team, including 2021 US Multihull Championship event co-chairs Chris Wessels and Ben Wells, as well as outgoing US Multihull Championship committee chair Ashley Enders.

“We are thrilled to have so many Wave Sailors competing in this event,” Wells said. “Whoever the best finishers are, they will have demonstrated consistent error-free riding. We also have so many fun things planned throughout the week; Our ultimate goal is for everyone to leave with a smile on their face and make amazing memories. “

Founded in 1985, the American Multihull Championships have grown into one of the nation’s premier sailing championships, counting world champions of many classes, Olympic medalists and several national champions from the multihull ranks as past and present competitors. The Perpetual Trophy was named the Alter Trophy in 1986 in honor of Hobie Alter, Sr. and his extraordinary promotion of the one-design multihull sailing and racing programs. The event is sponsored by Regatta Craft Mixers.
