Coconut Captain Mark Sinclair has resumed his 2018 Golden Globe Race journey and will sail solo on his Lello 34, Australia’s Coconut in Les Sables d’Olonne
Captain Coconut Mark Sinclair traveled from Adelaide, Australia to Les Sables d’Olonne, France to complete his 2018 Golden Globe Race journey.
The 63-year-old solo skipper was one of the first to register for the 2018 race and was one of 18 skippers to cross the start line.
But he ended up sailing rather than running, skirting the coast of South Africa and making nine laps of the Cape of Good Hope in his 1980 Lello 34, Coconut.
The dwindling water supply and the growth of barnacles on the hull led him to head to his home port of Adelaide.
Captain Coconut is now resuming his 2018 Golden Globe Race and left on December 5, 2021 – exactly three years after his stoppage – to start the 2022 race.
Under the 2018 Golden Globe Race Notice of Race, he can continue racing in the Chichester class and aims to be 6th in the 2018 race.

âIt’s an interesting route: a week to Tasmania, another week to New Zealand, before another two months to Cape Horn. All the sailors who completed the 2018 Golden Globe Race had done at least one round-the-world trip, so it’s a great preparation for the 2022 edition, to pass the Horn and bring the boat back to Les Sables d’Olonne! ‘ he added.
The Australian skipper started sailing at the age of 10. In 1984, she made two solo crossings of the Tasman Sea and is an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean.
The former commander of the Royal Australian Navy has also sailed solo in remote areas of Australia aboard his S&S 41 Wave of stars, which was sold to buy Coconut.
He now works as a hydrographic consultant, surveying remote areas on ships, small boats and airplanes.
