Cape Town – The Lipton Cup challenge ended this weekend at Club Mykonos Resort in Langebaan after 10 competitive sailing races which saw the Royal Natal Yacht Club (RNYC) emerge victorious for the 10th time in history of the race.

The final race turned out to be difficult with regular changes of position and a single point separating the winning RNYC from the defending champions, the Witbank Yacht and Aquatic Club (WYAC) which finished second and the Royal Cape Yacht Club (RCYC) which came third, with Aeolians Club in fourth place and Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club in fifth place.

RCYC was in the lead until the final 8th stage of the race, where they tried their luck, pushed their tactician Pete Shaw to the hilt and set off to find the left course, in the same area. that, two stages earlier, the Eolians Club. had sought.

“They looked good at times, just like the rest of the fleet, but as they all approached the finish line it was Aeolians Club that had the lead – and that was key in determining the winner. general, “said RCYC.

RCYC skipper Hylton Hale said that despite leading in previous races, the Aeolian Club crossed the finish line first, winning the last race of the final event, followed by RNYC, WYAC , the Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club then the RCYC.

RNYC Commodore Leo Kroonne said they were extremely impressed and proud of their team for participating in and winning such a tough competition. RNYC skipper Davey James will have his name engraved on the trophy for the very first time as the winning skipper.

“The event was very close. We were winning the event for nine races and we came to the final day with a one point lead over the other two teams (WYAC and RNYC), ”said Hale. “All we had to do was win the last race and we would have won the Lipton Cup title. It’s sport, however, it has its ups and downs.

Hale congratulated the RNYC on their victory and said the RCYC team look forward to training and competing again next year.
