CAMDEN – Megan Frey will share the challenges and learnings of her first 11 years as a Merchant Navy at a Camden Yacht Club Sunset Seminar on Wednesday, August 25 at 7 p.m.

Stunning experiences and photographs of ocean passages such as sailing around Cape Horn on the 1912 barque Europa, visiting the Vanuatu Islands in the South Pacific and crossing the Northwest Passage sea route from Dutch Harbor, from Alaska to Norway will be included.

Frey says, in a press release from CYC: “Ten years ago I was living on the Isle of Eigg in the Scottish Hebrides when my dear friend Simon asked me if I wanted to join him for a stint. of 3 weeks in Ireland. and back. I said ‘Most definitely’, that I had never sailed before and that I would be ready for the adventure. On our first evening, we were in a gale while crossing the Irish Sea. Simon looked up from the companionway with a hot cup of tea for me and said, “Megan, you’re not supposed to smile!” You should be afraid… have respect for the sea. ‘ But I was not afraid, I felt the most alive I have ever known.

Frey is currently spending the summer in Rockport as captain of the Cutter Owl, leaving Camden Harbor. This is the first time in 11 years that she has lived on land. Come here, Frey will describe in his own words how “being at sea is a form of empowerment for anyone, at any age – male or female”.

The 2021 Sunset Seminar Series runs from July 7 to August 25 on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. The presentations are free and open to the public. Door-to-door donations will be accepted to benefit the non-profit Camden Area Youth Seamanship Program (CAYSP).
