Blue Water Classics – Portraits of the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a book about Australia’s most famous blue water classic, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, which has become a bestseller and collector’s item for anyone. who are interested in racing.

With its range of Andrew Wilson photos and an astonishing array of intimate portraits including those of some of the racing legends including owners, crew, administrators and even the bizarre journalist. Backed by numerous interviews with Rolex Sydney Hobart journalist and media director Di Pearson, who probably knows more about racing than anyone, this is a book that examines the people who race. It is not about the boats.

Some opinions:

Geoff Stagg – yacht designer and competitor

An extraordinary book on the history and characters of the Sydney Hobart Race, a must read for all sailors. Memories of 20 weird races with three dropouts both good and bad came back thanks to the amazing photos throughout the book, supported by great stories.

My three victories with – 1980 Ceramco NZ line honors and handicap – 1985 Drakes Prayer, and yes, despite the fiasco I still count it – 1997 Beau Geste. Mix in several seconds in total, two line honors, a number of division wins, a Southern Cross Cup victory and the memories are well and truly shaken and stirred with this book.

The Sydney Hobart Race is, as I said, tougher than the round the world race and without a doubt the toughest and toughest ocean race on the planet. For years we have used the Race as a test tank for new models and I would often tell Russ (Bowler) and Bruce (Farr) to make sure the keel stays in place and the rudder doesn’t break, I take care of the rest.

Many thanks to Andrew and Di for taking on this monumental task with such fantastic results. it makes you want to start over !!

Paddy Broughton – owner Kialoa II

I just opened my gift! What a cracker. Now I know why Melinda wouldn’t let me buy or watch the book as Christmas approaches! Can I buy another limited edition for Keith my brother? Are there any left ??

Gary Appleby – owner of the 1990 overall winner, Sagacious V

Great job on the best ocean race in the world by Andrew and Lady Di !!

Tracy Matthews – Immediate Past Commodore Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania

It is a beautiful book.

Gordon Bray AM – Sports commentator and author:

Prodigious! Andrew Wilson has designed a unique level of privacy. Its lens captures the raw essence of the great race. Di Pearson’s narrative and editorial expertise unleashes the fascination, emotion and pure magic of our ultimate nautical adventure.

Lindy Boyd – daughter Peter Luke, co-founder of CYCA

Di, your long term dream, now a wonderful reality! Your best gift, your love of sailing and the sea and being the custodian of everything about the race, past, present and future from Sydney to Hobarts, all in your capable hands!

The photographs are simply amazing, which Monte and Dad would love. Congratulations: you and Andrew literally have to walk in the air, a fabulous book, which will delight so many people, can you imagine all the favorite waterholes, where sailors love to congregate and discuss all the characters, legends and history of the race!

Hoping your trip to Hobart was everything you could wish for, from your grandmother’s house in Watsons Bay to my grandfather’s house across the harbor from Clifton Gardens, the beginnings of Sydney to Hobart, after WWII took shape, I wouldn’t imagine anyone back then would have imagined racing to grow up and become the spectacle it is now!

Robyn Malcolm in Eden:

What can I say… .the book is beautiful. I picked it up a few hours ago, the dog missed his walk and I forgot to have dinner!

Congratulations to Andrew and Di, I think there will be many copies under the Christmas trees this year.

Peter Dean, competitor and son of the late John Dean (Winston Churchill 1998):

I just want to thank you for the kind words about dad and me in your new book. Mom gave it to me for Christmas and I didn’t put it down. What a fantastic book and an honor to be in it. I will definitely do another race when Herman has another boat !!!
