Fountaine Pajot has a solid track record in the 40ft cruising catamaran industry, followed by the Saona 47 and updated Tanna 47 models, Toby Hodges and François Tregouet take a closer look.
Similar to the Lagoon market leaders, the mass appeal zone is in the 40ft sector for Fountaine Pajot – now captured by the Fountaine Pajot Saona 47.
The Fountaine Pajot Helia 44, now replaced by the Elba 45, has long been the model and size of choice. Indeed, the Helia built on the dazzling success of the Belize 43, of which more than 200 were built in the early 2000s.
However, as the appetite for big cats has increased in recent years, the attention of whitewater multihull cruisers has shifted to this larger model. Seven Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 cats crossed the Atlantic with the ARC between 2017 and 2020 alone.
The 47 has a modern shape, with straight knots and an inverted diaphanous line. It incorporates a large volume in the hulls below deck to create room for the optional transverse cabins.
Cabin space is a top selling point, especially the owner’s suite on the port side, where there is also plenty of natural light and headroom.
The mast is relatively far forward for a sail plan with both a powerful mainsail and a superimposed genoa for modest performance under white sails.
The Fountaine Pajot Saona 47 has now been redesigned to become the Tanna 47, which has additional space for the flybridge and solarium.
The interior has also been reworked in the Tanna 47. There is a much larger and reconfigured galley, which is now U-shaped seaworthy and offers an impressive 300 liters of storage space. Layout options include three, four and five cabin sizes.
