DESTIN, Fla. (WKRG) – Teams from two local law enforcement agencies along with a team from the U.S. Air Force SERE School have completed maritime search and rescue training with the U.S. Coast Guard, according to a press release provided by the Coast Guard.

The teams consisted of first responders from the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, the Destin Fire Department and the United States Air Force SERE School.

The training was a week-long specialized search and rescue course designed to strengthen partnerships and promote mission success in the search and rescue mission.

United States Coast Guard instructors, stationed in Destin, conducted Boat Operator Search and Rescue (BOSAR) training. BOSAR is a nationally accredited program that allows federal, state and local responders to work together seamlessly to respond to mariners in distress.

First responders are also equipped with training in the tactics and techniques needed to locate and rescue people at sea.

The training is designated as the national standard for maritime first responders provided by the Coast Guard.

First responders spend many hours of water drills and scenario-based exercises as part of the training. This training not only tests the responders, but also their equipment underwater.
